Royal Nairobi Golf Club

Royal Nairobi Golf Club

Royal Nairobi Golf Club is the oldest golf club in Kenya. It was founded in 1906. The club is within 5 minutes of the Nairobi city business district along Ngong road. The course is long and challenging. It will test your endurance as it’s hilly on the front nine. It will test your shot shaping skills with it’s many doglegged holes. It will test your distance control and course management with the many bunkers of every hole. It is surely one of the toughest tests of golf in Kenya.

Hole By Hole Description

Hole 1 – Par 4 466 yards. S.I. 2

The first hole welcomes you with visual intimidation of the two ponds 50 yards from the tee box that should not be in play. There’s a fairway bunker that you have to navigate around. The generous green is well protected by bunkers with 3 on the right (front, middle and back right) and one on the front left. Hit the fairway get on the green and be happy with a par to start your round.

Hole 3 – Par 4 337 yards. S.I. 12

A short dog-leg left par 4 with water right in-front of the tee box that shouldn’t come in play. Aggressive players can choose to go with a driver over the trees left but most are best served by hitting less than a driver to the fairway. The hole is protected by trees long and left. The green is protected by two ponds on the left and bunker on the right. The green slopes left to right. Par is a good score.

Hole 2 – Par 5 548 yards. S.I. 16

A nice slightly dog-leg right par 5 that plays downhill. There’s a fairway bunker on the right side. Avoid slicing into the woods on the right or pulling into the woods on your left and you’ll have a green light to go for the green in two. The small green is protected by water on the left and bunker on the right. The green generally slopes from right to left. A good chance for your first birdie.

Hole 4 – Par 4 411 yards. S.I. 10

A long treelined, dog-leg left par 4 with a fairway bunker to the right. There’s a lateral hazard in the trees on the left side. The generous green is protected by bunkers on both right and left and a false front and OB long. A par is great score on this hole.

Hole 5 – Par 4 355 yards. S.I. 14

A short dog-leg right par 4 with a fairway that slants left to right. The small green is protected by bunkers on both front right and front left and falls off on the back and right side. So an accurate second short is required to hit this green.

Hole 7 – Par 5 498 yards S.I. 18

A mid-length par 5 that dog-legs to your left. The fairway slants from left to right, hit the middle or right of the fairway for a green light to go for it in two. There’s a fairway bunker on the left about 20 yards to the green. The generous and relatively flat green is protected by bunkers on the front right and front left. A good birdie chance.

Hole 6 – Par 3 203 yards. S.I. 8

A tricky, downhill, mid-length par 3 that you have to get your tee shot through a narrow opening of trees on both sides. The green is protected by 3 bunkers (front left, middle left, and front right) and it drops off on the back. A par is a good score.

Hole 8 – Par 3 188 yards. S.I. 6

A mid-length downhill par 3. The green protected by a tree on the left, bunkers on the front right, front left and drops off severely on the back and right side. Be happy with a par.

Hole 9 – Par 4 439 yards. S.I. 4

A slightly downhill par 4. There are two bunkers that cut fairway about 70 yards from the green. There’s water if you miss way right of the fairway on your second shot. The green is also protected by bunkers on both left and right. Par is a good score and a birdie if better.

Hole 11 – Par 4 460 yards. S.I. 3

Another narrow fairway on this dogleg left hole. The hole has a lateral hazard lining it all the way on the right side and OB on the left. There’s a fairway bunker near the dogleg with left side protected by trees as well. The green is protected by bunker on front left and right side. The green slopes back to front with a big drop at the back.

Hole 10 – Par 4 372 yards. S.I. 9

Mid-Length, dog-leg right par 4 with water about 120 yards both right and left ahead of the tee-box. Club selection is important on the tee as you’ll be punished for an errant shot into this tight fairway both left and right. There’s a fairway bunker on the right about 80 yards from the green. The green seats on a table top that drops off steeply on the back and is also protected by bunkers on the left and right. The green slopes back to front.

Hole 12 – Par 4 399 yards. S.I. 7

A long par 4, slightly uphill, dogleg left. You have to carry the trees if you want to be aggressive. There is a lateral hazard all along the left side. The green is protected by bunkers on the front right and front left. A relatively flat green if you can avoid the trouble.

Hole 13 – Par 3 129 yards. S.I. 11

This beautiful mid length par 3 will test your distance control. There are 3 fairway bunkers. The first is 70 yards from the green and others right and left of the fairway about 40 yards. The green narrow and long right to left and is protected by a bunker on the front right and back side and slopes from right to left.

Hole 15 – Par 5 534 yards. S.I. 13

This short par 4 has OB on the right and tree line on the left. Green is protected by bunkers on the front right and front left. The green is relatively flat.

Hole 14 – Par 5 563 yards. S.I. 15

A long par 5 that doglegs to the left. The fairway is hidden and requires a high fade or low draw stay on it. There’s a fairway bunker on the right. The fairway is tree lines and there’s a lateral hazard in the trees on the left. Hit the fairway and you have a green light to go for the green in two. The green is protected by bunkers on both front right and left. Green slightly slopes back to front.

Hole 16 – Par 4 406 yards. S.I. 5

A par 4 that is dogleg right. Favor left side to be able to see the green on your second short. The green is protected by bunker on the left. Beware of the OB on the right on your approach shot all the way to the back.

Hole 17 – Par 3 157 yards. S.I. 17

A par 3 that the green is protected by a big bunker on front right as well as on the left. You get a relatively flat green.

Hole 18 – Par 4 427 yards. S.I. 1

This is one of the toughest finishing holes in Kenya. There’s OB all the way on the left. There’s water about 120 yards from the tee boxes that shouldn’t really come in play. It gives you a narrow shoot and you should favor the left side of the fairway to be able to see the green but avoid OB on the same side. The right side is blocked by trees. The approach is uphill. The green is protected by bunkers on the front right and far left. Green slopes from back to front.
