Kiambu Golf Club

KIAMBU GOLF CLUB

Kiambu Golf Club is in the outskirts of Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya. It is only 16 km from the city center. It is one of the oldest clubs in Kenya that started in 1916 and started out as a 3 hole course. Kiambu Golf Club is a beautifully designed 9 hole course. You will not be bored on this 9 hole course even when playing 18. The second nine playing very differently from the first with different tee boxes and most of the holes playing to different greens. Renown for it’s punishing rough, Kiambu plays tough but it’s a must play course in Kenya.

Hole By Hole Description

Hole 1 – Par 4 335 yards. S.I. 17

A very interesting starting hole with a canopy of trees from the tee box that force you to hit a very controlled first short. The hole doglegs to the left making it ideal to a low draw. There’s a fairway bunker protecting the left side of the fairway. Most people will be force to hit a mid-iron to remain with a short iron or wedge to the green. The green is also protected by a bunker on the front right. The green is generous so proper club selection on the second shot is paramount. Birdie is a good score but doesn’t feel bad if you settle for a par to start.

Hole 3 – Par 5 584 yards. S.I. 5

Back to back par 5s give you a chance to get back in the game if you had a rough start. This is a straight forward hole that plays severely uphill. While the distance suggests it’s easy to get on two, only the longest of hitters can due to the elevation. Find the fairway, avoid a fairway bunker on your second shot and leave yourself an easy wedge shot to attack the flag for an easy birdie. Make sure you’re going to the green on the right! The green is protected by two huge mounds on both sides and severely slants back to front.

Hole 2 – Par 5 567 yards. S.I. 7

Long par 5 that will force many to play it in three shot. Only long hitters to hit to the left side of the fairway or down the depression have a realistic chance of getting on in two. The hole doglegs right at final third. The green is protected by a big tree on the left side of the fairway about 30 yards from the green and a green side bunker right behind it. Proper layup for the third shot will dictate your chances for a birdie.

Hole 5 – Par 4 460 yards. S.I. 1

Hardest hole on the course. It’s a dog leg right with a fairway that slightly slants to the right for short hitters. There’s an old vintage tree on the right side of the fairway that you have to think about. Favor the left side of the fairway for a decent chance of going for the green on your second short. That second short will require a long iron for most. The green on the right is your target. A par is a great score but don’t cry over a boggie.

Hole 7 – Par 4 337 yards S.I. 11

Another short par 4 that ideally be reached by long hitter if not for the trees that split the fairway about 90 yards from the green. Ideal tee shot is a 200-230 shot towards the fairway bunker on the left to give yourself an angle to the green on your second shot. Judge the distance properly on your second shot and you can attack the flag for a chance of birdie.

Hole 6 – Par 4 365 yards. S.I. 9

A short but tough par 4. It doglegs to the right with OB on the right so a precise tee shot is key. Find a club you can comfortable hit 220-240 yards and you’ll have an easy wedge for your second shot. The two-tiered green is protected by bunkers on the right and back left. Par is a good score on this hole.

Hole 8 – Par 3 200 yards. S.I. 13

This downhill par 3 plays tougher than it looks. It’s well protected by a fairway bunker 50 yards short and another elevated green side bunker on the right. For those who hit left to right shorts, there are big trees on the left that you have to think about. The last third of green slopes severely from back to front. Club selection is key to hit the green. Par is a good score, but birdies are more realistic when the hole is on the front half of the green.

Hole 9 – Par 4 408 yards. S.I. 3

A straight up uphill par 4 that’s made difficult by the huge tree on the right side of the fairway closer to the green. This tree forces you to favor the left side of the fairway for a good chance to get on the green in regulation. Play to the green on the right side which is protected by a bunker on the front that forces you to carry the ball in. The green slopes from back to front. Par is a good score.

Hole 11 – Par 5 540 yards. S.I. 10

See description for hole 2.

Hole 10 – Par 4 336 yards. S.I. 16

The tee box is hidden further left than number 1 making it a more severe dogleg left. See description for hole 1.

Hole 12 – Par 5 632 yards. S.I. 4

See description for hole 3. This time around you’re going to the green on the left side though.

Hole 13 – Par 3 181 yards. S.I. 12

See description for hole 4 although you’ll probably need one club longer this time around.

Hole 15 – Par 4 433 yards. S.I. 6

This hole plays very differently from hole 6 due to the angle of the tee box. You have a more straight forward tee shot who’s challenge is only to cover some trees about 60 yards infant of the tee box. Otherwise follow same strategy for hole 6.

Hole 14 – Par 4 443 yards. S.I. 2

See description for hole 5. The only difference that you’ll be going to the green on the left side. Therefore favor the center of the fairway as going far left might bring over hanging branches from trees lining the left side of the fairway in play for your second short.

Hole 16 – Par 4 294 yards. S.I. 18

The tee box and green change the look of this hole from number 7. It now plays as a dog leg left with trees blocking direct line to the green. Play a 200-230 shot favoring the middle of right side of the fairway for a look at the flag on your second shot. The green is protected by a bunker 20 yards short. You have a chance to attack the flag for a late birdie.

Hole 17 – Par 3 237 yards. S.I. 8

The hole plays a club or two longer than number 8 but the challenges are the same. See description for hole 8.

Hole 18 – Par 4 351 yards. S.I. 14

18 plays a little easier than 9. You’ll be going to the green on the left which means the huge tree on the right is not as much of a factor. The green is also not as protected so you can fly your ball in or run it in. A par finish is not bad.
